For the last several years, director Terrence Malick has been doing odd art films that are contemplative, improv heavy, and wandering low-key indie dramas. None of them were particularly liked and some thought they were just plain silly films. However, with his new WWII drama A Hidden Life, Malick returns to a more scripted and semi-plotted approach like his early work. In fact, the film has already premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews.
The story focuses on the true story of Franz Jagerstatter (Played by August Diehl), an Austrian peasant farmer who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. Because of this, he faced the threat of execution for treason and, through the love of his wife and child, keeps his spirit alive as he continues to resist.
The film is noted for featuring the final performances of the late, but great actors Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz. Part of their performances can be seen in the official trailer released for the film today. Check it out below:
