Last week a surprising piece of news came about that Andy Serkis, known for his motion capture performances in such franchises as the Middle-Earth saga and the Planet of the Apes prequel films, was in the running to direct the sequel to the 2018 surprise box office hit Venom (See the original news here). In a bit of surprise, it’s been confirmed that Serkis has won directing duties for Venom 2 after flying to Los Angeles mid-July to meet with Sony execs. The project will mark his third directorial effort after Breathe and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.
No matter who was going to direct it, it’ll be interesting to see if the sequel can match the first film’s surprise $856 million at the global box office. The story is being penned by Kelly Marcel and is expected to focus on Venom’s confrontation with his fellow symbiote Carnage given the first film’s mid-credits introduction of that symbiote’s host Cletus Kasady who was played by Woody Harrelson. It’s unknown whether Harrelson will return but Tom Hardy is expected to reprise his role of journalist Eddie Brock/Venom. The sequel is expected to hit theaters October 2, 2020.
