I was rooting for director James Wan’s Aquaman to be the film that turns the DCEU around…well now it’s officially called “Worlds of DC”. But I have to admit, the trailer released today for Comic-Con isn’t all that impressive. It has it’s moments, emphasizing an actual personality unlike previous DC films, but between very questionable effects, Amber Heard sort of just being there as the “Tough love interest”, and the humor feeling shoehorned, I’m not so sure. The problem is Jason Momoa isn’t exactly an actor. He’s got the look for Aquaman (Albeit modernized), but in terms of capturing a character’s depth the trailer hasn’t indicated that much. Not as well as the Shazam! trailer released today (See it here) which utilizes it’s humor to compliment the immature youths that lead the story.
For Aquaman, at least the story feels more defined. This tale of an outcast who comes to accept his destiny, but given the deceptive nature of trailers these days, truth is we really won’t know what we’re getting until it hits theaters December 21st. For now, check out the Comic-Con trailer below:
Aquaman co-stars Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman.
