It was inevitable. Currently standing at $1.1 billion at the box office, Aquaman has become Warner Bros.’s most successful DC film, outpacing even both of Christopher Nolan’s latter two Dark Knight films that finished just over $1 billion each. Was anyone surprised a sequel was going to happen? A horror-based spin-off focused on the Trench sequence has already been announced (See the announcement here) so it’s no surprise that a direct sequel to Aquaman has been announced today with a release date planned for December 16, 2022.
Of course Jason Momoa will return as the lead character Arthur Curry/Aquaman and it’s already been confirmed that David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the first film, will return to write the sequel. And while James Wan has been confirmed to return as a producer (Alongside Peter Safran), it has not yet been confirmed whether or not Wan will return to direct. I imagine we’ll find out soon enough as Warner Bros. will probably hope to profit off such a successful film as soon as possible. Hopefully the sequel will be just as entertaining and intriguing as the first film. Stay tuned!
