Been awhile since Kenneth Branagh has directed anything that wasn’t seemingly attached to a franchise. He first did the 2011 Marvel film Thor, followed by 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Meant to start back up the Jack Ryan films). Then he started off the current craze of live-action Disney adaptations with his well-received 2015 version of Cinderella. After that he did last year’s Murder on the Orient Express remake which received mediocre reviews but led to a greenlight on a sequel that will adapt Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile to continue the events of Hercule Poirot (Which Branagh stars as in the films as well). Now, he’s set to try and start up another franchise, this time based on the popular Artemis Fowl novels written by author Eoin Colfer and once again produced by Walt Disney Pictures.
The movie adaptation Branagh is doing will be based off the 2001 novel of the same name and sees genius twelve year old Artemis Fowl II, a criminal mastermind who hopes to rescue his criminal father and restore the family fortune…by seeking the existence of fairies in hopes of robbing them. Colfer himself described his original novel as “Die Hard with faeries” which sounds cool in theory. Today, the teaser trailer for the film has been released that more gives insight into the visual elements than anything else but offers enough intrigue where further footage could reveal something interesting. For now, check out the teaser trailer below:
Artemis Fowl stars Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Hong Chau, Nonso Anozie, Josh Gad, and Judi Dench. It is set to hit theaters August 9, 2019. In addition, check out the new teaser poster for the film below:
