When the 2013 novel Doctor Sleep, a direct sequel to Stephen King’s 1977 novel The Shining, was released it was a reminder that King wasn’t a fan of the Stanley Kubrick-directed 1980 film adaptation of his original story. Otherwise, why write a sequel decades later that focuses on an adult Danny Torrance that keeps the tone of his original novel rather than the movie? However, while King didn’t like the film, everyone else considers it one of the greatest horror films ever made.
So despite Doctor Sleep having a film adaptation coming out on October 30th, director Mike Flanagan has been clear that while the film is a direct adaptation of King’s novel, it would also exist “in the same cinematic universe” as Kubrick’s The Shining, keeping memorable elements from the film that audiences could take note of. And it’s those cues that the final trailer for the film takes note of so as to, hopefully, unite the fans of both the books and the film together. Check it out below:
Doctor Sleep stars Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran, Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe, and Cliff Curtis.
