In one of the more interesting progressions in a show lately, after having Claire Foy play a young Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons of The Crown, Olivia Colman is set to take over in the role. This is due to the fact each season of the show is meant to tackle a new decade in the lives of the British royal family. This means that the entire cast of the series will be swapped out every two seasons with older actors taking over roles. Hence why not only is Colman replacing Foy, but Helena Bonham Carter will take over the Princess Margaret role from Vanessa Kirby, Tobias Menzies will replace Matt Smith as Philip, and Ben Daniels will replace Matthew Goode as Lord Snowdon. Josh O’Connor and Erin Doherty will be joining the cast in season 3 as Prince Charles and Princess Anne, respectively.
Season 3 of The Crown will cover the period of 1964 through the early 1970’s. It will premiere on Netflix in early 2019. For now, check out the first photo of Colman as Queen Elizabeth II below:
