Here’s a weird award contender for later this year…a drama directed by Peter Farrelly…yes I’m of course referring to one of the Farrelly Brothers who made such films as Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, and Stuck on You. Yet it seems Peter Farrelly decided to pull an Adam McKay and take a run at the Oscars with his new film Green Book. The film is based on the true story of the bouncer of a New York nightclub who was hired to be the chauffeur of world-class African-American pianist Dr. Don Shirley on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South.
The film was co-written by Farrelly, Brian Hayes Currie, and Nick Vallelonga. Vallelonga is actually the son of the bouncer of the story whose name was Frank Anthony Vallelonga, known by people as “Tony Lip”. Tony Lip will be played by the great Viggo Mortensen so the story will luckily have a lot of personal investment in the writing and a strong performer bringing that material to life. Not to mention Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley. Whether Farrelly makes a splash like McKay did a few years back with The Big Short is anyone’s guess but you can check out the first trailer for the film below and decide for yourself:
Green Book is set to hit theaters November 21st.
