Blumhouse Pictures has a few things it’s doing that are frankly genius. One, they are producing horror films almost exclusively. And second, minus a couple exceptions, they are producing them on very small budgets. In addition, they have been allowing most of these films to have unconventional premises that will the attention of audiences. Yes, some are misses like Truth or Dare, but for the most part Blumhouse has offered continuously solid entertainment. One such example was Happy Death Day, the 2017 film directed by Christopher B. Landon.
The film followed a college student (Played by Jessica Rothe) who slips into a horrific time loop as she relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity. The ultimately made $123 million on a mere $4.8 million budget. So, naturally, a sequel was unavoidable. In fact, the production already got underway back in May with Landon once again at the helm as well as taking over writing duties from Scott Lobdell who penned the first film. Actors Rothe and co-star Israel Broussard will return while Suraj Sharma and Sarah Yarkin will join the cast. Jason Blum, Angela Mancuso, John Baldecchi and Samson Mucke are producing.
Now, however, it’s been made official with Universal Pictures, who also distributed the first film, today announcing a release date for the sequel as February 14th 2019. The sequel will be titled Happy Death Day 2U. No word on what the plot of the sequel will be although it will most likely utilize it’s Groundhog Day inspired roots again somehow. Despite an admittedly cheesy title, I have no doubt that Blumhouse will have another win with this film. Stay tuned!
