When Jason Statham first appeared in the Fast and the Furious franchise, he was master criminal Deckard Shaw. First he had a cameo in Fast & Furious 6 before being the main force of danger for the heroes in Furious 7. Then he showed up again in the next installment The Fate of the Furious, ultimately teaming up with special agent Luke Hobbs (Who he tried to kill in Furious 7) and Shaw seemingly became one of the heroes by the end of the story. Now, Hobbs and Shaw are set to be team-up again in the new spin-off…well Hobbs and Shaw. This time they’ll both be the heroes of the story, but that means someone new will have to be the threat of the tale.
With that, it was announced today that Idris Elba is in final talks to be the villain in Hobbs and Shaw. Given his excellent villainous work in Star Trek Beyond a couple years ago, in which he created a layered and motivated opponent to the crew of the Enterprise, this would be a big casting upgrade for the spin-off. However, no details have been given what his character will be like. Hopefully, it works out as the film is set to begin production soon in the Fall.
Hobbs and Shaw is directed by David Leitch and is set to hit theaters July 26, 2019.
