After it just being announced yesterday that Depp will star in an adaptation of Waiting for the Barbarians (See the announcement here), it seems Depp will be working to keep himself busy with old fashion character work as today it was announced he will also be starring in the true story-based tale Minamata. The film is being handled by HanWay Films.
The film will be primarily based on the 1975 book of the same name written by Aileen M. Smith and her husband, the subject of the book, W. Eugene Smith, a WW2 hero-turned-war photographer. Spending years as a recluse after the war, Smith found himself being given a commission from Life Magazine editor Ralph Graves to journey back to Japan to expose a big story: the devastating annihilation of a coastal community through mercury poisoning.
Depp is about to begin filming later this month in Morocco for Waiting for the Barbarians and seems will immediately then begin shooting Minamata which is set to begin shooting in Japan and Serbia in January 2019. Screenwriter David K. Kessler is adapting the script. Stay tuned!
