When I woke up this morning, the last thing I thought I was going to say was “The upcoming Joker origin film is going to be one of the year’s best”. Yet, lo and behold, I say it with a straight face (Ironic to the situation really)…Joker is going to be one of the year’s best. The teaser trailer released today not only creates a disturbing and intriguing psychological dig into the famous villain, but the tone set is one that is borderline believable for our world. With Martin Scorcese set as producer for the film, you can see the influences of the famous director, but in a good way! Taxi Driver meets The King of Comedy although the teaser trailer shows there is nothing particularly funny about what this character will endure as he transforms into the famed Clown Prince of Crime. Check the teaser trailer out below:
As you can see, unlikely director Todd Phillips (Who co-wrote the script with Scott Silver), is ready to take this little unlikely risk by Warner Bros. all the way, fully embodied by lead actor Joaquin Phoenix’s immersive take on the character. A version delved in childhood innocence and hope that is slowly shattered, beaten to a bloody pulp, by the harsh realities of the world.
The first poster released yesterday by Phillips (See it here) was simple, yet effectively set up the tragic clown’s overhanging desire to live in a fantasy. Now, with this teaser trailer, I’m sold. If you’re not or displeased in the famous origin-less Batman villain getting an origin story…put on a happy face and pretend it’s all a bad dream. That seems to be his Joker’s motto.
Joker co-stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. It is set to hit theaters October 4th.
