October seems to be the month of the anti-heroes when it comes to the movies. Last year, Venom took the October record domestically with $80.3 million. Now, it’s been confirmed that Joker, one of this year’s most controversial films, has proven you don’t need a big budget to grab the big numbers.
It’s been confirmed that Joker has taken in a massive $96.2 million domestically, thus making a new opening record for the month of October. In addition, the film has taken in $152.2 million globally, thus bringing the film to an incredible worldwide opening total of $248.4 million. Along with the opening domestic record, it has one of the best three-day openings for an R-rated title and is the highest opening in two years for Warner Bros.
Given the film was made for an estimated $55-64 million budget and the Oscar buzz surrounding the film (Particularly Joaquin Phoenix’s performance), this risky film seems to have paid off in every way a studio could have hoped and imagined. Stay tuned!
