Legendary Entertainment is no stranger to comic book series adaptations. Not only did they produce Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, but they also produced Zack Snyder’s Watchmen. Adding to that resume is the announcement today that they have acquired the movie and television rights to the Black Hammer comic series franchise with plans to adapt the property into multiple projects.
Authored by co-creators Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston, the comic was first published by Dark Horse Comics in 2015. The title refers to the lead superhero of the story, Black Hammer, who joins with three other superheroes to save Spiral City but in the process became trapped in a timeless farm town with little chance of escape. The comic series has won two Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, including best new series in 2017.
Lemire and Ormston will serve as an executive producer. Given Lemire alone has an impressive resume under his belt, authoring other such acclaimed graphic novels as Essex County and Underwater Welder, it’s a strong bet that this could be one epic franchise wherever it lands. I imagine given the speed to profit off new franchises we’ll find out soon enough. Stay tuned!
