What do you get when you mix in Kurt Russell as Santa Claus, the director of films like Home Alone and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone serving as producer, and Netflix? Apparently you get The Christmas Chronicles in which two siblings try to catch Santa Claus…but he turns out to be an action hero archetype so things get complicated. The type of oddball film that only Netflix would really produce for sure.
Russell has shown to be fairly consistent in his projects even in his later years where he has mostly reserved himself to supporting roles like Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 or Mr. Nobody in The Fate of the Furious. What The Christmas Chronicles seems to do here is take the Russell of old, who led such unique action films like Escape from New York and Big Trouble in Little China, and put a child-friendly spin on it. Enter Chris Columbus, who once owned the “mischievous children” film brand whether it was Home Alone or The Goonies. He is only a producer here, but this feels like a film he would have directed back in the day. While Clay Kaytis is the one at the helm of this film, I have no doubt Columbus influenced the project a little bit. In any case, perhaps this can be a cool little film for the holidays.
The film will stream on Netflix, starting on November 22nd, but teaser trailer for the film has already been released, indicating Netflix will market it beyond a simple one-off trailer like they tend to do with most of their projects (Sometimes the week before the film becomes available for streaming!).
