Well, it’s official. After months of wonder what the title would be (And months of hearing pointless anti-The Last Jedi complaints that the franchise had lost it’s way), it’s officially been confirmed with the teaser trailer for this year’s Episode IX that the suppose final installment in the Star Wars film saga will be titled The Rise of Skywalker. Check out the teaser trailer below:
The title is simple but appropriately follows what Luke Skywalker said at the end of The Last Jedi that in fact the Jedi will be reborn through Rey. Many are speculating that while the main story will mostly follow what happened in The Last Jedi, that Rey’s origins will be backpedaled to reveal she is a Skywalker or, at least symbolically, is one. But the real shocker is the laugh of a particular character heard in the final moments of the trailer.
In defense…we never actually saw Emperor Palpatine meet his end in Return of the Jedi. We just saw him fall and saw a light show. Given his level of power, it’s not so unbelievable (And several spin-off comics have revealed him surviving in various ways post-ROTJ). In any case, Abrams looks to, no matter what side of the Star Wars fence you’re on right now, try to satisfy all fans with a conclusion that brings the entirety of this generations-spanning film series to a proper finish. At least for now. As Luke’s narration in the trailer points out…no one is ever really gone.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to hit theaters December 20th.
