Somehow I find it funny that the 2000 live-action film How the Grinch Stole Christmas looks and feels more like it’s original source material than upcoming animated version The Grinch. The new international trailer shows how the film easily captures the visual look of Dr. Seuss but the tone is overly light.
The Grinch seems more like Squidward from SpongeBob SquarePants than the bitter and wicked character we’ve seen before. Even when Jim Carrey took on the role he never forgot the character’s loathing nature. But here, surprisingly, Benedict Cumberbatch, who has played loathing with ease in the past, seems to be going for an off-put neighbor than a man wanting to destroy an entire town’s holiday. His choice of vocal tone is odd and doesn’t seem to at all fit the character. It’s a little sad as I felt Cumberbatch was perfectly suited for this twisted holiday character, especially after his grandoise vocal work as Smaug in The Hobbit films. In any case, check out the international trailer below and decide for yourself:
The Grinch is co-directed by Peter Candeland and Yarrow Cheney. It is set to hit theaters November 9, 2019.
