The Walking Dead Franchise Debuts Comic-Con Trailers, Andrew Lincoln Confirms Exit After Season 9

The Walking Dead is about to pull a Spin City. Today, at their Comic-Con panel, lead star Andrew Lincoln has now confirmed that he will be leaving the show after the upcoming ninth season of the main series in the franchise. He was quoted the following today:

This will be my last season playing the role of Rick Grimes. I love this show, it means everything to me. I love the people who make this show. I’m particularly fond of the people who watch this show. I don’t want this to become an Oscar acceptance speech or a obituary. My relationship with Mr. Rick Grimes is far from over.

With Lauren Cohan also set to leave after this upcoming season, several new casting announcements have been given which will attempt to change up the cast. This includes actors Samantha Morton and Dan Fogler. It’s a strong bet that the show will be ending soon anyway as the ratings for the show have continued to drop. Still, a show lasting nine seasons is no small feet. While nothing is set in stone, for now check out the Comic-Con trailer for the upcoming ninth season below and catch the season premiere on October 7th:

In addition, the second half of season 4 of Fear the Walking Dead has been released, a show that serves to keep Walking Dead fans occupied during the off-season when the main series isn’t running. That show will continue it’s fourth season on August 12th and run through September 30th as it airs the second half of it’s 16-episode season. Admittedly, the spin-off greatly improved in the first half of season 4, demonstrating a much more inventive narrative with better stakes and more dramatic depth. At least in my opinion.
