You know I have never really been on board with the DC Cinematic Universe. Maybe it’s the monotone colors, the depressing nature of a series of films that are about guys in tights fighting crime (It almost makes it appear satirical in some weird way), or maybe I just will always prefer Christoper Reeve as Superman and Michael Keaton as Batman. But, I have to admit, for awhile I was very fascinated with one version Warner Bros. was going for for awhile…”Justice League: Mortal”. Basically it brought on “Mad Max” director George Miller who was going to do the reverse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of having solo movies that led into a team up film, Miller was going to make a “Justice League” film first, introducing all the characters at once first and then follow it up with solo movies. The film had already cast all of the principal actors. The downside…
Put it this way, Adam Brody would have played The Flash, Armie Hammer would have played Batman, Common would have played Green Lantern, DJ Cotrona would have played Superman, Megan Gale would have played Wonder Woman, Hugh Keays-Byrne would have played Martian Manhunter, Santiago Cabrera would have played Aquaman, with Zoe Kasan as Iris Allen. The villains would have been played by Jay Baruchel and Teresa Palmer as Maxwell Lord and Talia al Ghul, respectively.
The film was slated to begin filming in 2007 but the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike kept anyone from perfecting the script while Miller fought to have the film shot in Australia while WB wanted it shot in Canada. In the end, it all fell apart even though costumes, set, and several other aspects were in place already. I suppose I can’t deny that such a young cast playing them might have backfired, but George Miller has shown an amazing ability with choreography and well-planned storytelling…
However, like the documentary of “The Death of Superman Lives” that told how Tim Burton’s Superman movie was never made and getting an inside show into all the pre-production work that was done, we will get a similar treatment here.
A documentary is being made currently that will talk about “Justice League: Mortal” and go into more depth what happened exactly. To start promoting, they revealed a principal shot of Megan Gale in her Wonder Woman costume:
I have to admit, I like this actress much more than Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. For several reasons, namely…she’s over 6 feet tall which means you would have gotten an actual Amazon-sized woman for the role. Instead, we got this…
Either way, earlier this year the documentary, simply titled “George Miller’s Justice League Mortal” also revealed three posters to show the film was clearly going to go for a more comic book feeling closer to Marvel.
The synopsis for the documentary is as follows:
GEORGE MILLER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE MORTAL is an exploration of the abandoned 2009 big screen adaptation of the DC Universe from legendary Australian Filmmaker George Miller. Examining the expansive source material of which the film was to be based off of while giving thought to the profound affect it’s release would have had on today’s film & pop culture landscape.
While I can’t begin to guess how well “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” will turn out or how well it will lead into “Justice League: Part One” in 2017 (God I hope they change the title at least) or even how well that movie will be but George Miller has always had my vote as a director. I simply hope he gets to keep making great films and his next installment in the “Mad Max” series will be just as good as “Mad Max: Fury Road” was this year.
